WHAT IS MND?

Motor neurone disease is a name given to a group of diseases that affect the neurones (nerve cells). It is a neurodegenerative disorder of the motor system of adults and is therefore uncommon in people aged less than 30 years of age. The neurones control the muscles that help us to, breath, move, swallow, and speak. When theses muscle groups loose there stimulation from the neurone they begin to weaken and waste, eventually resulting in system failure and death. MND was first describe by Jean – Martin Charcot in 1869

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MND There are 4 types of MND which affect people in different ways but that overlap in many ways.

These are:

  • 1. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which is the most common form, with both upper and lower neurone participation. It is characterised by weakness and wasting in the limbs, average life expectancy is 2-5 yrs from onset of symptoms.

  • 2. Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP) affects about a quarter of those with MND and involves the upper and lower motor neurone. Symptoms include slurring of speech or difficulty swallowing, the life expectancy is 6 months to 3 yrs.

  • 3. Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) which affects only a small number of people, mainly affecting the lower motor neurone. It is characterised by weakness or clumsiness of the hands, average life expectancy is more than 5 yrs
.
  • 4. Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is a rare form of MND involving only the upper motor neurones, and causes weakness in the lower limbs, some people can experience clumsiness in their hands or speech problems. The life expectancy can depend upon if the disease progresses to ALS.
